Venetian Snares - Horsey Noises

Artist: Venetian Snares
Album: Horsey Noises
Year: 2009
Genre(s): Electronic, experimental, breakcore

This E.P. is short but manic and typical Venetian Snares insanity. Horsey Noises and the remix, Horsey Noisers, are two of the only songs to feature vocals from Venetian Snares, making them sort of different.

Bastard Noise - A Culture Of Monsters

Artist: Bastard Noise
Album: A Culture Of Monsters
Year: 2010
Genre(s): Powerviolence, death metal, noise, progressive, experimental

Bastard Noise have really gotten interesting lately, moving beyond noise and back into powerviolence as they did with Man Is The Bastard. This is not your ordinary stuff by any means... some weird and very interesting stuff right here. Great fucking album.

Z-Rock Hawaii

Artist: Z-Rock Hawaii
Album: Z-Rock Hawaii
Year:
Genre(s): Experimental, noise rock, alternative

Z-Rock Hawaii comes from a pretty interesting lineup, to say the least... it's basically a Ween/Boredoms collaboration, featuring Dean and Gene Ween of Ween as well as Yamantaka Eye, Seiichi Yamamoto, Yoshimi P-We, and Yoshikawa Toyohito of Boredoms. The result is noisy, interesting, and sometimes even kind of funny.

Give it a shot.

IC joins the Big Dipster team

We have a new member, IC, who just put up his first post, an Earl Shilton album. We look forward to his future contributions.

Earl Shilton - Two Rooms (Full of Insects)

Artist: Earl Shilton

Genre(s): Experimental death/black/thrash metal

Earl Shilton is a one man project of Alex Thomas (who was the drummer for Bolt Thrower on Mercenary). I've always had a hard time pinning the music down to one genre, but the entire album is great because of that. Supposedly he's played live shows with his brother and sister filling in on drums and bass. Technically, the title track is Zwei Räume (Voller Insekten)... it's just in German. In 2007 he posted a blog on MySpace saying a new album was finished... I have yet to hear it though. Until then, check out this album, it's his only official release so far and it's a damn good one.

Winters In Osaka - Swarm Of Witches

Artist: Winters In Osaka
Album: Swarm Of Witches
Year: ???
Genre(s): Noise

Chicago noise band containing one of the guys from Plague Bringer and a bunch of other dudes, some of whom are from other bands I'm not really familiar with. This is really good stuff. I'm not familiar with a lot of Winters In Osaka, but what little I know has made them one of my favorite noise groups, and this is my favorite release I have of theirs.

Why don't you give it a listen?

Isis - Live

Artist: Isis
Genre(s): Post-metal, progressive

One of the greatest bands of the last ten years that will have a huge amount of influence yet on great bands to come (at least, I'd guess they will) was Isis, who broke up just recently to go about their separate paths. Throughout their career of various studio work and E.P.s, they also released five live albums. As a somewhat late tribute to Isis and their still sort of recent end, I'm posting all the official live works in one entry. Listen to all of them, but Live V is the best one (Oceanic in its entirety mastered by Justin Broadrick). Enjoy.

Maps & Atlases - The Three E.P.s

Artist: Maps & Atlases
Genre(s): Math rock

One of the first posts on the Big Dipster was Perch Patchwork, the most recent Maps & Atlases album. If that was your first exposure, you REALLY need to get the E.P.s. Bird Barnyard is all right and shows an interesting and very different start. Trees, Swallows, Houses is kind of like Minus The Bear on crack, angel dust, acid, and ecstacy. You And Me And The Mountain calms it down a bit, but contains some great songwriting and is a good precursor to Perch Patchwork. Check these out.

Boredoms - Chocolate Synthesizer

Artist: Boredoms
Album: Chocolate Synthesizer
Year: 1994
Genre(s): Noise rock, experimental, noise

One of my favorite releases from a band that's really at the forefront of the "Japanoise" underground. This release is definitely weird, but easier to get into than some of their other stuff.

Try it out.

Tuxedomoon - Desire

Artist: Tuxedomoon
Album: Desire
Year: 1981
Genre(s): Post-punk, avant-garde

Tuxedomoon is pretty neat and fairly well-known in the avant-garde popular music scene. If you haven't heard them before this is a good one. If you have heard them but don't have this one, it's worth getting, too. You win either way. Unless you already have this album. Then you can just appreciate that we're posting it for everyone to enjoy.

The Hush Sound - Like Vines

Artist - The Hush Sound
Album - Like Vines
Year - 2006
Genre(s) - Indie/Alternative

The Hush Sound is an Indie quartet based out of Chicago. Most of their songs feature female vocalist and pianist Greta Salpeter, who also has a solo project which I hear is pretty good. Anyway, check out The Hush Sound and choose to dig it or not.

Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine - Rampton

Artist: Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine
Album: Rampton
Year: 2002
Genre(s): Drone, doom

Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine is essentially a supergroup, consisting of Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate, Burning Witch, Goatsnake), Greg Anderson (Sunn O))), Burning Witch, Goatsnake), Lee Dorrian (Cathedral, Napalm Death), and Justin Greaves (Iron Monkey, Electric Wizard). Some pretty decent drone on this album. Check it out.

Nurse With Wound - Rock 'N Roll Station/Second Pirate Session

Artist: Nurse With Wound
Album: Rock 'N Roll Station/Second Pirate Session
Year: 1994 (reissued 1998 with Second Pirate Session)
Genre(s): Experimental, avant-garde, industrial, noise

Nurse With Wound have been one of my favorite groups for awhile now. Rock 'N Roll Station is probably one of their best albums (though also one of their most accessible), and here it is presented with the harder-to-find companion disc, Second Pirate Session, containing alternate versions and sessions from the same recordings. Both are very worthwhile.

Bison B.C - Earthbound

Artist - Bison BC
Album - Earthbound
Year - 2007
Genre(s) - Stoner Metal/Sludge

Bison B.C is a band that has been growing on me for the past year. It wasn't until a couple months ago I heard their first release Earthbound, and it left a great impression on me. Bison B.C keeps growing upon each release, but I would still title this as their best release so far.

Album: Operation Hummingbird

Operation Hummingbird is not one of Death In June's more well-known albums, but it's a rather underrated one that has some very pleasing moments.

Vampire Moose - Serenade the Samurai

Artist - Vampire Moose
Album - Serenade the Samurai
Year - 2006
Genre(s) - Metal

From Last.fm:
Fusing death metal brutality and raw hardcore intensity with abstract, progressive arrangements and jazz-like instrumental dexterity, Mooose sounds something like the progeny of an insane cross-breeding of Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan and Obituary - only weirder and more vicious.

Boris - Variations

Artist: Boris
Album: Variations
Year: 2010
Genre(s): Stoner rock, psychedelic, drone, experimental

So, before you get disappointed, I'll tell you flat-out that this isn't really "new" Boris. It's more of a greatest hits, although several songs have been re-recorded to showcase Michio Kurihara and Farewell appears in its full version for the first time on CD. It focuses on Heavy Rocks through Smile era Boris, so you don't really get all the early heavy stuff, but that's all right I guess. If you buy it, this comes with a DVD of them performing live in Japan. So you should try to get an actual copy.

Either way, here's Variations.

Indian - The Unquiet Sky

Artist: Indian
Album: The Unquiet Sky
Year: 2007
Genre(s): Doom, stoner, sludge

One of Chicago's heaviest bands right now, Indian serves up doom that's outright abrasive. The distortion could bury you alive, and the snarling vocals are absolutely vicious. This is some pissed off, hostile stuff. Reminds me in a lot of ways of early Amplifier Worship-era Boris.

Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste Of Rain... Why Kneel

Artist: Deep Puddle Dynamics
Album: The Taste Of Rain... Why Kneel
Year: 1999
Genre(s): Hip hop

Deep Puddle Dynamics are a hip hop supergroup comprised of Slug (Atmosphere), Doseone (cLOUDDEAD, Subtle), Sole, and Alias. They're one of the few supergroups I know that's just as good as anybody involved in it. These are some sick rappers. Every track is great, but the highlight for me is Heavy Ceiling, my personal favorite hip hop song ever, and this is definitely one of my favorite underground hip hop albums.

Thou - Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For

Artist: Thou
Album: Baton Rouge, You Have Much To Answer For
Year: 2010
Genre(s): Doom, drone, sludge

Thou is one of the heaviest bands out there today and one of the metal bands I expect to really take off in the next few years. They're also very prolific and put out a few releases a year. This particular E.P. is heavy, diverse, and features a sick-as-fuck Nirvana cover. I couldn't recommend Thou more. They're really one of my favorite bands as of late. I plan to post everything I have from them over the span of the next few months, so keep checking back if you dig this one.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes EP

Artist: Fleet Foxes
Album: Fleet Foxes E.P.
Year: 2006
Genre(s): Alternative, folk

One of my favorite bands in the so-called "indie" scene, Fleet Foxes started with this self-titled E.P., which I decided to upload because most people don't seem to be aware it exists. It's not quite as good as their self-titled full-length or Sun Giant, but this is a raw, less-developed sound that can really give you more appreciation for the band and how far they've come in a few short years. I'm really excited for their new album later this year.

Comus - First Utterance

Artist: Comus
Album: First Utterance
Year: 1971
Genre(s): Progressive, avant-garde

British prog rockers Comus really don't get enough credit. Equally deserving of praise as fellow prog-rockers of the time such as Genesis, Yes, and King Crimson, Comus were just a little too weird to get much mainstream attention. Their debut, First Utterance, is prog fused with a bit of avant-garde and experimental influence. This is a classic prog album. What's not to love?

Don't let their name fool you. This is not grindcore, and it's not a joke band either (though the name is fairly ridiculous). This is great neofolk in the vein of Death In June or Current 93, and probably the best band I've heard since then to practice such a sound. Highly, highly recommended.
