Young Widows - In And Out Of Youth And Lightness

Artist: Young Widows
Album: In And Out Of Youth And Lightness
Year: 2011
Genre(s): Noise rock

New album from Young Widows reminds me a bit of the Birthday Party meets Health... really cool direction they've headed in. It's a lot more polished and refined but still retains their classic rawness.

Instrumental post-metal band Pelican's first full-length, Australasia, is pretty fucking epic and awesome. If you don't have this and are into this sort of thing it's a must-have.

Consisting of instrumental outtakes from The River Of Crime, Tweedles!, and The Voice Of Midnight, the 1000-copy limited Smell My Picture is fun for the whole family. I got this recently at a fantastic live show on their Talking Light tour and got a very high number for my copy, 994/1000. Enjoy.

Closure in Moscow - First Temple

Artist - Closure in Moscow
Album - First Temple
Year - 2009
Genre(s) - Rock/Progressive/Experimental

Sounds a lot De-Loused era Mars Volta. I wouldn't say they are ripping them off, but take a great amount on influence from their vocals and basic song structure. There are some unique songs found the album, and I find this to be a solid album overall.

One of Albert Hammond, Jr 's (The Strokes) solo albums. I personally enjoy this record more than Julian Casablancas solo efforts.

Sonic Youth - SYR 9: Simon Werner A Disparu

Artist: Sonic Youth
Album: SYR 9: Simon Werner A Disparu
Year: 2011
Genre(s): Avant-garde, noise rock, alternative

The latest in Sonic Youth's highly experimental SYR series is this interesting soundtrack. It's a lot more musical than most of the SYR albums but still really bizarre and not particularly accessible. A great listen nonetheless.

Boris - New Album

Artist: Boris
Album: New Album
Year: 2011
Genre(s): Metal, pop

One of three new Boris albums, this one released in Japan only, this album is a bit of a surprise. It's a lot more poppy, electronic, and polished than anything they've done before. Interesting, but a hell of a lot different than, say, Amplifier Worship or Flood or the rest of their discography.

Sunn O))) - ØØ Void and Sunn O))) Meets Nurse With Wound - The Iron Soul Of Nothing

Artist: Sunn O))) and Sunn O))) Meets Nurse With Wound
Album: ØØ Void and The Iron Soul Of Nothing
Year: 2000 and 2008
Genre(s): Drone, dark ambient, experimental

Sunn O)))'s classic ØØ Void was reissued by Daymare in 2008 with the previously unreleased The Iron Soul Of Nothing as disc two, a collaboration, if that's even what it is, with Nurse With Wound, though I have the feeling it may be more in the nature of a remix album. Nonetheless, this is great stuff; the NWW collab in my opinion is better than the original album (particularly Ash On The Trees), and these artists should perhaps work together more often in the future. Enjoy.

Kolihapeltis - Vomiting Blood

Artist: Kolihapeltis
Album: Vomiting Blood
Year: 2010

My personal attempt at wall noise, a subgenre I haven't really dealt with much. I think this release turned out all right, though; it consists of one track around 25 minutes long. Enjoy.

Melvins - Honky

Artist: Melvins
Album: Honky
Year: 1997
Genre(s): Metal, experimental, avant-garde

Perhaps the most experimental full-length album ever released by the Melvins, Honky isn't for everybody; however it has over time become probably my personal favorite. Mombius Hibachi captures the essence of classic Melvins with a hint of more strangeness than usual, and most other tracks really take it over the top. A ballsy album. Not easy listening, but rather interesting listening.

Duran Duran Duran - Over Hard

Another Duran Duran Duran album with another obnoxious album cover. This one is a bit more straight-up breakcore, but doesn't lose any of the authenticity that the previous album had. The track Furious George is incredible.

Year: 2010
Genre(s): Noise

This, which I actually have owned since summer from a show and would have shared earlier except that it's only on tape, and I am unable to rip tapes, was just posted on the Static Fanatic recently. So I'm passing on their post to you. This is Deterge, another project of Jim Haras from Pyrrhic Thanatology Monger, and released on his own label, Fusty Cunt Tapes. Really cool stuff. Side A is absolutely fantastic, consisting of muffled screaming behind irritating pulsing walls. Side B is some good straight up harsh stuff.

Updates

If you noticed, the page looks a bit different now. In addition to the slightly different look of the layout, we've provided links to some of our favorite blogs and a section in which you can scroll alphabetically by artist and see our old posts organized clearly. We haven't gotten around to tagging all our old posts yet, so this should be complete in a few days. Most of this was the work of KB and not myself, but I figured I'd put up a post letting everybody know. Also, the link had been broken I think from the start on a World's End Girlfriend entry from October; I fixed it if anyone's still interested.

Cheers,
DW.

Album: All Pigs Must Die

The first half of this album is more their neofolk style while the second half is more experimental in nature. I personally think the first half is stronger but that's just me; I'm sure a lot of Death In June fans would disagree. Nevertheless, a good album.

Trepalium - XIII

Artist - Trepalium
Album - XIII

Great album from French metal band Trepalium. Lots of great metal elements implemented into the album. Some songs are more groovy, while other are fast, heavy and technical. The vocals are somewhat "corish", but they work well with the music. Pretty original album that is totally worth checking out, especially for big fans of the metal genre.
