Health - Health
Album: Health
Year: 2007
Genre(s): Experimental, noise rock, alternative
Health is one of those cool bands who doesn't sound like anybody but themselves. Drawing influence from no wave, math rock, noise rock, but not quite falling into any of these categories, they're a cool fucking band. Here's their debut full-length.

My favorite doom band to come out fairly recently, Thou, appear here with a collection of Black Sabbath covers. This E.P. is sick.

Jonny Greenwood - There Will Be Blood
Album: There Will Be Blood
Year: 2007

One of my favorite movies ever and one of my favorite film soundtracks ever. Awesome, emotional, dynamic, engaging stuff here. And in case you don't know who Jonny Greenwood is, he plays guitar in Radiohead.

Burning Star Core - Challenger
Album: Challenger
Year: 2008
Genre(s): Experimental, noise, ambient
This is some pretty cool noise/ambient. It's really out there, definitely not just straight-up harsh noise or anything. Some of the pieces are honestly quite beautiful. Worth getting for sure.

Kolihapeltis - The Centipede
Album: The Centipede
Year: 2010

This is the new E.P. from my noise project, Kolihapeltis. As of right now, it's digital only. I may or may not change that. Either way, enjoy.

Antigama - Warning
Album: Warning
Year: 2009
Genre(s): Grindcore, metal, experimental
Whoa. This stuff is pretty insane. Reminds me almost of Meshuggah if Meshuggah were a grindcore band. Antigama really puts a weird spin on the grindcore genre. Anyway, I'm listening to this for the first time right now and I felt like you guys might appreciate it. I'm not really familiar with this yet; just thought it was really cool so far and would fit this blog.

The USA Is A Monster - Wohaw
Album: Wohaw
Year: 2005
Genre(s): Noise rock, experimental, avant-garde
Pretty insane album here. The production and sound remind me a bit of Lightning Bolt, though there are more members here and it's not so much based on insanely fast musicianship.

Thee Kvlt Ov (((Øurøbørøs - BLVD
Album: BLVD

This band hasn't released a whole lot, but this is a fucking cool E.P. It features an awesome cover of BOC's Godzilla, along with a few originals. Highly recommended.

VENNT - VENNT
Album: VENNT
Year: 2008
Genre(s): Doom, sludge, drone
VENNT is one of the heaviest bands I've heard since Godflesh. I think they've only released this four-track EP, but it's definitely worth dedicating a little time to.

!!! - The Dis-ease/The Funky Branca
Album: The Dis-ease/The Funky Branca
Year: 1998
Genre(s): Dance, experimental
The first official !!! release, this single is a bit dirtier, weirder, and more intense than most of what followed from these guys. Nonetheless, awesome. The Funky Branca really takes the cake here as an incredible track.

Heavy as shit. I'd compare this to Thou or Samothrace or Ocean or any of those other ultra-heavy doom bands coming out these days. Recommended.

Jane is a pretty cool project involving Noah Lennox (Panda Bear, Animal Collective) and Scott Mou. Really worth a listen. Very ambient and bizarre stuff.

Cult Of Luna - Eviga Riket
Album: Eviga Riket
Year: 2010
Genre(s): Post-metal, ambient, audiobook
Eviga Riket, Cult Of Luna's latest release, is not exactly typical of them... it's actually an audiobook containing some musical passages but mostly spoken word. I'd say it's worth checking out. The story follows the concept behind their last album, Eternal Kingdom. The story starts off fairly interesting, and the writing isn't terrible, but this is far from being a classic. Nonetheless, I really like the idea, and maybe Cult Of Luna here will start a trend that other bands can follow. Still, if this becomes the case, I hope other bands pull it off a bit more strongly in future examples.

Black Dice - Broken Ear Record
Album: Broken Ear Record
Year: 2005
Genre(s): Avant-garde, electronic
The only Black Dice album I'm familiar with, Broken Ear Record is yet another pretty bizarre album that I like a lot. It's sort of like an avant-garde Animal Collective or something. Oh, and yeah, this is pretty much the worst album cover ever.

Yowie - Cryptooology
Album: Cryptooology
Year: 2004
Genre(s): Avant-garde, mathcore
Okay, so it's not really mathcore, but I don't know what to call it. Imagine an instrumental band in the vein of The Residents meets The Locust. Ugly riffs in bizarre time signatures that are constantly changing. It's one of the most original and enthralling listens of the last decade. Highly recommended.

Renaldo And The Loaf - Songs For Swinging Larvae
Album: Songs For Swinging Larvae
Year: 1981
Genre(s): Avant-garde, experimental
Probably one of the strangest albums I've ever heard. If you dig stuff like the Residents, you'll love this. This is on par with any of the best stuff the Residents ever released.
Enjoy.

High Rise - Dispersion
Artist: High Rise
Album: Dispersion
Year: 1992
Genre(s): Psychedelic rock, space rock, experimental
High Rise from Japan caught my attention when I was in high school probably largely because I was into a lot of Japanese bands at the time... but moreso probably because they a pretty awesome sound. I swear to god though, I always read the first track's name as "Outside Genitals."

Gloomy Sunday - Beyond Good and Evil
Artist: Gloomy Sunday
Year: 2007
Genre(s): Sludge doom metal
I honestly can't remember how I found these guys, but this is a badass album. Heavy sludge doom from Sweden. They're still making great music, but haven't done any releases yet since. I heard there's a split with Lazarus Blackstar in the works though, so if you like this, keep on the lookout for that!

El Revengo - demo
Artist: El Revengo
Album: ?
Year: ?
Genre(s): Hardcore, hard rock, thrash metal.
A few years back I found El Revengo's website and downloaded a 4 track demo they had posted on their site. A few months later, their site was gone and I couldn't find any information on them anywhere on the net. For just four tracks, it's pretty amazing material that I haven't found elsewhere ever since their site went down. Apparently it's members from Holy Terror, but I honestly don't have much more info about them other than I think some of them wear luchador masks I guess.
Okay upon writing this I realized there's a myspace. Apparently I suck at finding things and haven't looked for them in over a year - MySpace

Justice Yeldham - Live 2005
Album: Live 2005
Year: 2005?
Genre(s): Noise
Justice Yeldham makes his variety of noise music with panes of broken glass, often painfully self-mutilating himself on stage. Really cool stuff. I'd recommend looking up some videos. This here is (obviously) live material from 2005. Just a few short tracks, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Daughters - Live At CBGB
Album: Live At CBGB
Year: 2004
Genre(s): Mathcore, grindcore, experimental
Really cool live album that features most if not all (I don't remember exactly) of Canada Songs and their self-titled E.P. Daughters have changed a lot since this, but I'm not complaining because their new stuff is excellent. Nonetheless, their old stuff is fantastic too, and this live album really captures the band at a great point in their career.

Kolihapeltis - Heliokapilts
Album: Heliokapilts
Year: 2009
Genre(s): Noise
All right, time for some shameless self-promotion. This is the first release from my personal noise project. It's really short, only like eight minutes or so long in three tracks, so I guess more of an EP than anything. It's limited to 30 copies, and that marvelous cover you see is the homemade packaging. I think I did an all right job, and I am really looking for a fanbase right now. Mine is currently pretty much just a few people I know. It's kind of straightforward harsh noise made with a guitar amp, a mixer, and a microphone. Quality is mediocre. My stuff has improved since, but I think this is maybe my rawest material, which makes it kind of cool in a way.
Check it out.

Ef - Mourning Golden Morning
Merzbow - Hybrid Noisebloom
Album: Hybrid Noisebloom
Year: 1997
Genre(s): Noise
With a discography of over 300 albums (probably way more than that by now) and countless collaborations, splits, etcetera, it's really hard to know what to listen to by Merzbow and becomes even for the biggest fan almost a preposterous task to listen to all of it. This is one of my personal favorites. The textures are rich; this isn't just your typical pffshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh noise. The pieces are dynamic and constantly changing and always exciting. So many layers to this.

Triclops! - Out Of Africa
Album: Out Of Africa
Year: 2008
Genre(s): Progressive, experimental
I saw Triclops! open for Melt-Banana toward the beginning of this year (or was it last year at this point?) Anyway, pretty sick live act. If you get a chance you should catch them. The vocalist goes insane; after just a few songs his face was covered in his own blood. On album they're pretty impressive as well.

Crippled Black Phoenix - I, Vigilante
Album: I, Vigilante
Year: 2010
Genre(s): Post-rock, post-metal
Consisting of members of Electric Wizard, Crippled Black Phoenix consider their songs to be "end-time ballads," which seems rather fitting once you listen to it. I haven't heard their other stuff, but this new release really impressed me enough that I'm soon going to check it all out.

Philip Glass - Solo Piano

No thanks.

Melt-Banana - Initial T.
Album: Initial T.
Year: 2009
Genre(s): Noise rock, punk, experimental
Melt-Banana have been making some of the best and most original noise rock in the Japanese scene of the last twenty years. This 2009 E.P. is (unless I'm mistaken) their most recent release consisting of new studio material.
So you should get it.
